Interesting links - Lost But Not Gone!

Post subject: Lost But Not Gone!
Remember all those files you've downloaded over the years, characters, clothing, props, poses, textures, etc.? And for one reason or other you have a system crash and lose all of it so you figure you will just download those items again but to your horror you find that the site and or the items no longer exist. There is still a way to access these lost files! It is not full proof and it is not gauranteed but I personally have recovered lost files from some lost sites.

Before you ask, yes this is legal since these items were previously available to begin with.

Here is my method:

Go to the Internet Archive website and use the WAYBACK MACHINE. This is quoted from the site itself,

"The Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded to build an Internet library, with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format."

If you want to visit a site that hasn't been around for a few years just type in the old address in the Wayback Machine address box and it will give you a list of links with copies of the old site. Sometimes the old files are still on these copied sites which means you can still download old items! Now it's BAD News/GOOD news time. BAD news is that 9 times out of 10 the zip file you downloaded will be corrupt and assumed to be unuseable. GOOD news, now here is the trick, you need to download a utility called [Link removed by Tormie: commercial product]. This little tool can usually repair most corrupt or damaged zip files. I have personally been able to restore alot of old files this way.

This is just another alternative for those wanting to track down old files to use for their own personal use but it will also allow you to retrieve information such as the author's e-mail for contact purposes. Give it a try...who knows what treasures you'll uncover!

Hi Marv and Welcome back. Well, I hope this is not a change in your attitude, but the tool that you advertised is a commercial product (it costs about 29 bucks) and you should know how we like freebies only , so I had to remove the link.

I'm seriously doubtful about this post: using the wayback machine, as far as I know, it is not possible to do what you said, but maybe I'm wrong and you can write some links with those zip files... Some examples could "clean" it all...

Hey Tormie, I guess it has been a while. Sorry about that link, I'll bet with a little searching I could probably find a freeware alternative.

It is possible to retrieve lost files from old pages. But not all archived pages have all of their files intact, some do some don't. They may have missing images, zips, etc. So like I said before it's never a guarantee. It's kind of like treasure hunting.

The Wayback Machine has Posette Forever archived back to February 27, 2004. Take a look at these pages of archived links for Posette Forever.

Yes its an interesting thingie.
I tried it some time ago and was able to get me some of remc's (3rdEyeFunction) stuff.
I just tried it on Rubio's, but all I got are the Pages. No files avaliable. It's sad. Used to have some nice hair that I missed...

*Sigh* Kenny sits back in his rocking chair whittling on a stick with his knife along with a gray haired Bus driver and a gray bearded
guy with a big sledge hammer both sitting on his front porch saying to each other they sure don't make posetteforever like they use too.

Hi Marv,

Thank you for posting this Link

It caused me a few sleepless nights in front of my PC, but i found some stuff that i thought i'd missed forever... such as sharkeys freebies and some clothing from awful soul i didn't even knew about.

There is a longdress on poserfashion.net from 2002 for Posette - but the other links are broken so now i know now exactly what i missed!

Heite

PS: the broken files can be repaired easily by using winrar.

I'll bet if we all dusted off those CD's of accumulated freebies that we have been collecting over the years we would probably find quite a treasure. I know that I probably have a lot of free items that are hard to find still in my collection of downloads. How possible would it be to start a lost and found section Tormie?

Would be a lot of read me files out there and a lot of copyrights to go threw. Not to mention getting in touch with the maker of the models and textures. Sounds like a great idea.

There is no telling how many I have in the good old days as well. To make it fun. We could make a treasure chest. Zip up some really cool stuff we have found. Get permission and do a mysterious package of the month for awhile until we run out of good things. Just an idea.

We have a place here Marv : http://www.posetteforever.com/boneyard63.html

We can't post the files without the permission of the author, the difficult thing of the process is to contact the author (find his actual address...) and wait their reply. In the past sometimes it worked, a lot of times not. After a while one become bored but personally I start again asking when I'm in the mood.

'Intellectual Property' is one reason I cannot post eg Joat Mon's JulieSuit to freebies...

D'uh, I've unpacked several Gb of ancient zips this week, have come to dread some authors' work: Yes, you know the style-- Everything, *everything* piled into root, textures 'externalled' to a non-existent D:drive or 'Mom'sUploads' directory, no indication which figure or variant is conform target, clumsy poke-throughs routinely concealed by 'hide', the most mild poses causing wrap-ups. And, sadly inadequate, contradictory, incoherent or simply *NO* ReadMe file...

Sad part is I've come to recognise their styles, begun to learn work-arounds and how to fix the basic gaffes with CR2Edit...

Hmm, my archive has just yielded a bunch of impossibly cute 'Race Queen' costumes by 'teppan'. Sadly, like JoatMon, teppan has dropped off the wwweb. Worse, teppan did NOT add read-me files. I've just about eliminated conformance to Posette variants and morphs, so perhaps they're for MayaDoll, whom I'll try next...

I suppose I could rip the OBJ from their CR2/PP2, wiggle them in Anim8tor and re-import them...

D'uh, I'm still reading through my notes and downloaded tuts, so the joys of grouping, JointParameters etc are not for today !!
