Post About Poser, our audience and us.

#1  Ozymandias Jones 26 Feb 2004 04:02

Thinking about why we do this Poser art thing. And about those who look at it.

For me, as you may have noticed I don't post a lot of pics, it's purely for fun and relaxation. I start a lot of pics, get bored or interrupted and never finish them. My hard drives are littered with pz3 files that haven't been opened for months, or even years

Thing is, I'm still enjoying Poser and the creative process. I'm making an effort to finish more work and get it out on display. This is, I suppose, as much for the sake of credibility (read ego) as anything else. I've spent years hanging around forums and chatting away without really proving that I can actually use this Poser package and finish a half-decent picture. Not that some others far more prominent than I seem to bother with this

And who looks at this stuff. We get upset by low hits My Ned Kelly pic had pulled almost 120 hits at PP before I wrote this. No vicky, no mike, no nudity more hits than some other more worthy images that I browsed through posted around the same time. But not as many as other images posted by 'Personalities' in the gallery. Why? Who knows!

Maybe because it was something different. I also noticed that Den's work had inspired another artist to try something else. I thought that was great. A real tip-of-the-hat to the quality of Den's work.

I printed the same Ned pic out on A3 paper with a nice border and the six-year-old kid of my flat mate stuck it to the wall above his bed. He knows nothing about 3D, art or Poser, forums or galleries or hit counts. But he likes Ned Kelly and is chuffed with his new pic. And that made me more satisfied than the hit counts on a hundred sites.

I think it's time, for me at least, to forget the hit counts, the comments and the ratings, and just have some creative fun. And to remember the audience who really count those who matter to us.

Ozy

Thanks tda42. Not quitting at all, just thoughtful. Hopefully you will see much more from me in the future.

It was more a case of worrying too much about how good my work was supposed to be as opposed to how good I wanted it to be for me.

Forgetting the first rule of any art: that you make it for yourself first and foremost.

Your very right about one thing. The amount of art, Poser and otherwise, that is put on display on the web. I myself can only find the time (and the interest) to visit a handfull of Poser galleries on any regular basis. And there are so very, very many.

And even then most images are given a once over and maybe a brief comment, then on to the next... like junk food. It takes away the flavour and leaves you a bit unfulfilled. So you look at some more. Its like throw-away art.

I went to our State Gallery on the weekend. My Gf and I spend a full day there and didn't get all the way through. And it's not that big a gallery! We took our time, sat in front of some paintings and let them work on us for a while, discussed what we each saw in it. Whether it moved, or touched us in any way. It was fun, even for an artistic laymen like me. We'll be going back again soon to finish the gallery, or maybe finish it the next time.

Just some more thoughts.

Just re-reading my original post and want to clear something up. I wasn't complaining about the lack of hits... I was actually surprised at the amount of hits I did get. Far more than I had expected for an Image of that type.

That's part of what got me wondering.

I think that doing art only for fun is the best way. You have your own work which is not strictly related to Poser so what you do is coming entirely from your fantasy... I can't stand the "Poser masters" or "Personalities": yes they make technically perfect works, but they are made to show their products or the products of they business friends. Mike here, Vicky there, barbarian up, princess down... Boring... You work is a well made picture with a great story under it, so it deserves a lot of clicks !

I'm only sorry not to have the time to lurk all the places where you posted it   !

LOL - to tormie's comment, not the subject. I think that one of the resons why you got a lot of hits on this picture is because it has something of you in it.... that the image tells a story and that makes it interesting and not just a surface.... I bet it made a great poster on the boy's wall:)

Sheesh, you guys

tda42, I get what you are saying and I do agree. Thanks for your comments and getting into the discussion. This is why I always enjoy my time hanging around here with you lot

tdaC, I hadn't thought about the story aspect adding to the image and that makes sense. Thanks for pointing out the obvious   And to tormie, too.

And Tormie... The size of my gun!   We'll leave that one to dwell in myth and legend

I'm with you Ozy, to me when this isn't fun anymore, then I'm done with it. I don't do it for the hits, the comments or any of that stuff, I do it because I love it, and I've bored everyone in my house with my art, so I decided to inflict it on others on the interenet
Tormie, you hit the nail right on my head, the reason I spend a lot of time in "Postwork" is because I'm trying to bring more of me into my artwork than I feel I can in just Poser. I guess if I could make my own models, clothes and props I might feel a bit different...nahh, I would still be more at home in photoshop and it's filters. But that's just me, I don't want a straight out of the box feel to my artwork, I want to expand it as far as it will let me and see what all I can do with it. Maybe that's good, or maybe it's bad, but so what, as long as I enjoy it, that's all that counts right?
