Yus, I have more problems to pick your minds with :3

One frustrating problem I have with Poser7 is it's renderer.

First up: When using Firefly, it ignores atmospheric settings. If I try for a fog, it renders as if the fog isn't there. I tried importing a Fog prop and it either crashed the renderer, or ignored the fog prop when I reduced the render resolution.

Second up: The renderer crashes almost every time I attempt to render a figure using the Dynamic hair from the Poser 6 or Poser 7 libraries.

I'm thinking my problem isn't hardware related, so much as renderer settings related. My Settings under 'general preferences' are the default:
Adaptive Bucket size - checked
adaption threshold 0.3750
Memory limit buffer 32
Render Process - number of threads 1
Seperate Process is unchecked
Max cached Renders 10

My system specs, just in case are:
Windows XP up to date
Intel Core 2 Quad Core Q6600 @ 2.40 GHZ
2 GB RAM
GeForce 8800Gt video Card @ 512MB
GeForce Drivers up to date

Hi
I'm a neewbie with P7 myself, and I didn't try all the render options, yet. But @ your second problem I experienced when rendering more complicared stuff it may be better to deactivate Adaptive bucket size, cos if adapting while rendering it causes render errors. About your other questions we'll have to wait for our more experienced users. I think Whazizname would be the one, maybe try contacting him directly

Hi Lickitung

First of all, you've almost the same configuration of my PC, it can be said that they are twins

If you have a Gygabyte motherbord sure they are

BTW, I've the same CPU and the same GPU, I overclocked the processor to 3.0 Ghz and I've 4 GB of memory.

For what concerns the stabilty of your system, supposed that you're running it with no overclocking, the crucial factor is the memory modules, I found that a cheap brand brings the PC to some crashes, so I suggest you to test the memory for some ours with an application, for example MEMTEST and in case you've a lot of errors, just buy better modules.

About atmospheric effect, it's resource consuming and have a lot of settings here and there, included the lights, it works better in a scene with props, like walls and object and the easiest way to set it up is in the material room, there click on "create atmosphere", then select "object" and "atmosphere" to trim the values. But for all the options you should refer to the manual. I found to have better results with postwork BTW.

You should run at 4 render processes, 'cause you've a quad core, separate process unchecked is ok, the memory buffer, I changed it but I've seen no effects.

I suggest you to put the "max bucket size" value at a low value if the scene is complicate, first setup firefly render in automatic setting, then change to manual, import from automatic and change the value. You may better upgrade P7 at SR3 if you haven't already done it, I remember something related to hair that was fixed with a SR but I'm not 100% sure of it.

You could build a simple scene and change the value till you find the optimal setting. Render dynamic hair alone and see what happens...

Actually I'm no more running Poser on Windows but on Mac Os, it's a a little more stable but it's not that it doesn't have problems ...

( Mac Os on my PC ... Yes it is )

@ Andreas "adaptive bucket size" should reduce the size of the bucket automatically in case the computer is under stress, for example the default value is 32, with adaptive bucket size you should see the "render square" reduce it's dimension from 32 to a lower value during the render when the square "meets" a complicate situation, in any case I suggest to low down the initial value from 32 to less in case the scene is very complicate.

P5 has the best working skin node of all, have you tryed it? and with global light sets you can fake really well the IBL and AO feature.

Sorry for the long wait between responses on this, just had a hellish few weeks in North Carolina away from home and just got back. The short version is that I'm once again single and I now have one less grandfather

I'll need to try out the stuff with some of the dynamic hairs and see if it helps. I do notice a difference in the way the renderer goes about rendering. The four process threads now split the renderer into 4 sections and it renders background faster, but the rest it chugs along. I did get a warning today after my pc BSOD'd for the first time and microsoft said they noticed my BIOS version supposedly doesn't match the version necessary for my processor. I'll need to look more into that as well... oi.

I don't use it very often. I also have not (intentionally) faked the Poser AO.

To Likitung:

Sorry to hear of your recent troubles; I hope that you are doing ok, in spite of it all.

Thanks everyone, means alot to me to get sympathy on this rather than the drama/attention whoring accusations most forums would have given

Does anyone have any clue as to why the Firefly renderer would ignore atmospherics tho? Things like fog, even the ground plane seem to get ignored :o

Have you turned on the dial in the light parameters?

None of them have anything to do with atmospherics or renders from what I can see.

Hey Lickitung , maybe this tutorial will help you it's for Poser 5 but with minor diferences will work on other versions,

http://www.nerd3d.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=7

It's about the fog.

Sometime ago I posted an explanation about the render setings for P6

http://www.posetteforever.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1870

In P7 you the Irradiance caching slider, this control the quality of Ambient Oclussion, use lower values for fast Test renders and use maximun value for final

This is just a recomendation always set Post filter size to 1 or you'll get blurry renders, just use it with deph of field just to not use a too much hi Pixel sample and wait for an eternity, actually I'd recomend never use the ugly Poser deph of field and render a simple deph cue map and post work it in Gimp or Photoshop that's way faster and funny

Hope it helps
