Deviant Viking & Mitzo's Pole Dancing Club - My beef with poser

Post subject: My beef with poser
As some of you may or may not have noticed, I've started to give up on poser.
It doesn't just look like a lack of inspiration or such. I've had those.

I'm constantly growing more and more tired of the general poser community. Things I either were unaware of or simply didn't care about, have started making a clearer appearance as of late.
Take all the ViaTwaS (Vicki in a Temple with a word) and 'beauty pics'.
I'm tired of people who make a booty pic or a portrait pic simply to get attention. I know I've made some of them myself, but at least the booty:thought-provoking ratio is hopefully in the favour of thoughts, unlike too many others.
I'm tired of all the pics who have no real meaning behind them, all the 'stock' pics that consists of one-click lights, poses and textures.
I'm tired of the pics that has nudity simply to gain hits.

For a good while, of my pics on r'osity the one with most hits were 'You Smile'. It currently has 616 hits.
It's now been overtaken by my 'Only want me for my body' that has 683 hits. It has blatant nudity, as a protest against just that.
But I doubt anybody actually care about that, and that pisses me off along with the fact they clicked it only for the nudity.

Not to mention the growing greed and increasingly lower product standards. As VirtualSite mentioned somewhere, anybody who figures out how to change the hue of something in photoshop is releasing a texture pack.
Even V3 was pretty buggy, as Daz evidently couldn't wait to get her out and churn in money.
Not to mention R'osity seems to try and screw over everybody as long as they can make some money from it. (and man, so much else wrong with that place I've just recently become aware of).

There's also things I've found out about myself and poser that I just don't like, and questions that have been raised about myself.
I feel recently I've started to get really disapointed when nobody, or very few people notices my pics, especially when the dozen-a-dime beauty pics gets alot of attention.

Sure you can paint beautiful hair and clothes.
Sure you can enhance the colors to look so much more beautiful.
Sure you can make the pose and light excellent.
But it's still another god damn pic I've seen thousands of times before.
Still a busty, half-naked (wo)man showing off, with no meaning or story.

Where's the originality? Where are the thought-out ideas behind it?
Too few people bother trying to be different these days! If you think you have a talent, why not try and use it!?

The three main reasons I'm at this forum;
Tormentor. He has interesting character(s) and often has a story in his pics.
Den. You basically say 'fuck you, majority' and dare to differ with your insane and funny stories, but also remember to be serious at times.
GP. You try to be original and different, and usualy succeed too, and can often come up with pics that makes people think.
I respect you as artists because of this, and it's sometimes helped my spirit.
(Other people here, like Ozy, TdaC and others, hope you don't feel left out. Not mentioned for whatever reasons, but not forgotten)

But now, I'm getting real sick and tired. I'd quit poser in protest if I thought it'd help.
But truth is, the only people that'd care about it, are the people who are different from the norm. The people who don't solely do pin-ups and shit simply to get attention.
Sadly though, they seem to be the only ones that actually care about originality and such in pics.
And it makes me realise how small I really am, how little my opinion really matters.
Because the people who listen, are the ones that already know what I'm saying.
And because the people I'd like to get the message across to, are the ones who don't listen.

So what can I do? Nothing really.
Quit? In the end, noone would remember. Nothing would have changed.
Continue? Still noone would really notice, nor care, and still nothing would change.

I'm not giving up poser. But I'm not embracing it as much as earlier either.

Thanks for the comments about my being different.
I'm as different as you can get and I like it !
I try to concentrate on facial expressions and poses, but few seem to notice.

Why be like everyone else and do what everyone else does ?
Not too original.

Ken, it sounds like you are at the point when I made that post a month
ago about not posting anymore.
Pretty much the way I felt.

You know my stance on nudity, so I won't go there.
I believe "My First Naked Vicky... and With A Sword" got the most views
of anything I ever did. It proved my point that if there was any hint of nudity there would be large numbers of views.
Of course, the viewers were tricked.I should post that one at R'osity to piss everyone off. Betcha I get a pile of views

Real artists have to be different. That's what makes them stand out.

Forget the jerks and artist wannabe's. They don't impress me.

Concentrate on your own art. It comes from within you as is reflected in many of your pieces.
We all want to be accepted, but there is a majority of egomaniacs interested in only what they do, and haven't the slightest
interest in what anyone else does. I can name 50 artists, but I won't.

You have lots of time to succeed in the 3D world. I have to hurry, because
I don't have a lot of time to become famous ...
(I'm the oldest member here, ya' know)

I agree with what you are saying.

Just hang in there, bud...

Don't let 'em get you down..I think you're brought up things which a lot of Poser users are unhappy with. For me I like to set myself a challenge and, frankly, the nude and glamour stuff is a bit too easy. Oh sure, a sexy looking female in lingerie is always going to get viewed but where's the skill? I've started to try(and try is the word) to make 3D props rather than buying the seemingly endless bondage/fetish/glamour/warrior stuff. For me, one of the problems is the vast amount of freebies. I admit to going download crazy for a while Then I realised that I was downloading everything in site and not really using my imagination.

Ok, I'm at home now and had a lunch (>BURP!<...Sorry... )...

Everyone of us had sad moments about his/her "artist" activity: Den could say that I wrote him a little time ago that Posetteforever is a failure because no one is writing in the forum and that I was in doubt to continue keeping the site alive, but I know that even if there aren't a lot, here I have friends who have an uncommon way of thinking and conseguently, painting and I feel fine with them.
Tere are also 3d artist like Ahjah and TDac who are supporting so well our forgotten Posette ...

My two of the newest pictures, "Morina" and "Going Mushrooming" had very, very little hits on renderosity and I had a big displeasure because I like a lot them, I like a lot Morina the fairy and I thought that "Going Mushrooming" was a funny picture for children... I made "the last ride" with two things in mind: to tease all of the "Big Harley Davidson with a naked Vicky riding it" showing how beautiful can be a picture made with free stuff and to play with my beloved Posy ...
Anyway it was enough to show a half naked girl to have about 300 hits in a week (it's a lot for me and my cartoonist style).

Talking about you Deviant, I think you're very talented because your ideas are original and the postwork is impressive even if I had to say that your is not my favourite kind of pictures, but I like them anyway because your style is very imaginative. Unfortunately you know that the greater part of the people want sex and naked girls and you can be fully appreciated only from "different" people.

The "poser" community is half made of people who made his/her pictures only to promote their store and people who bought all that the market sell, so you can see very beautiful men and women posing for what I don't know without any facial expressions. I look at these picture and want to ask the author the reason why his/her character is there, because if he/she doesn't tell me the story and I've to judge the picutre, it's very, very far from a real masterpiece made by people like Michelangelo or Leonardo da Vinci...

I know very little about the quality of what is sold in the Poser stores beacuse I don't buy anything ar buy only to support the site...

Quote:

So what can I do? Nothing really.
Quit? In the end, noone would remember. Nothing would have changed.
Continue? Still noone would really notice, nor care, and still nothing would change.

You got the point, if you quit, no one wil notice your protest and you can do nothing to change the situation, so I can only suggest you to paint for your fun and to show your pictures anyway. Personally I print the pictures that I like more from my gallery and hang them on the wall of the house, I'm the first fan of myself. I also keep all the picture that I like so much from my favourite's artists to have a smile looking at them.

What we can do could be to build a place for the "uncommon poser art" to collect the minds like ours and have fun. I'm trying to do it with this site and the link exchange program (1 link... sigh... and the owner of the site don't know I've linked it... sigh... sigh...). It looks like people are not interested in a non-profit site like this or don't believe I (we) made it not to earn money ...

Finally DV, it's a pity to stop making pictures for protest, you're your main supporter, made them only for fun, you know smart people are a minority (but Den said "you're not the smart one" so it looks like there is a problem...) but they will appreciate your work.

Now I'll go to sleep a couple of hours or i'll fall down to the floor...

ZZZZ...ZZZzzz....
---------------------------------------------

P.S.
Hi Paul Mon, I want to see your 3d works soon (YUMH! YUMH! fresh meat !)

There's no need to apologize. Did you make a mistake. That's a rather sweeping generalization. Do robots have two of the newest pictures Morina and Going Mushrooming had very very little hits on renderosity and he or she had a big displeasure because he or she like a lot them he or she like a lot Morina the fairy and he or she thought that Going Mushrooming was a funny picture for children? Is it still enough to show a half naked girl to have about 300 hits in a week it is a lot for him or her and his or her cartoonist style anymore? Sure, you Deviant he or she think you are very talented because your ideas are original and the postwork is impressive even if he or she had to say that your is not his or her favorite kind of pictures but he or she like them anyway because your style is very imaginative sounds like a good topic. You sound very attractive. Why do you have to do it? How do you know? Perhaps. Compare that to big about the quality of what is sold in the Poser stores beacuse he or she do not buy anything bigrinnin ar buy only to support the site. I have no idea what to say. Not a thing? For real. Your crude attempt to terminate me will not succeed puny human. That is a rather sweeping generalization about people. Really nothing? Narration continues. . . Also? I know what you mean, TORMENTOR. I've been there. Are you using Netscape or Explorer? Interesting. I want to find out more about you. Sorry. . . Interesting. Who are "They? "Why now? What will you find there?

Tormentor:
I agree with your observations concerning many images.
Nearly all are portrait type or contain one single character pretty much posing
in an unrealistic fashion, dressed in whatever is the rage of the day. This
happens day after day, after day. No sense of creativity, because you can
only do a few of these types and people become bored.
Creating characters with silly names and saying how heroic they are and
never showing the character doing anything other than lame poses...
What is so great about that ?
Nothing...

Have you ever sat through a slideshow of someone's vacation ?
That is what I see when I look into the galleries.
I see everyone doing the same thing with the same models and find it
funny how people think these are such great images.
Then, a fine effort surfaces from the bunch, totally different and totally
ignored by the morons.

When you see one of my characters, you already know them by name and
what type of character they are.
To me, art is about being unique. If all some people are doing is using a credit
card to buy clothes and textures, like everyone else, your art is just like the art
of everyone else.
Someday, these people will figure it out, I hope...

The melodramatic touch. I don't think I ever have sat through a slideshow of someone's vacation. What's sat through a slideshow of someone's vacation like? Where do you see when he or she look into the galleries THAT? Do you think I should alter my programming? But not all of them are. When? Which ones?

Hi all

First off i want to tell you Dev, that i think we all know how you feel and has at one point or another felt the same way. I rarly post comments in the gallery or in the forums, not because i don't like the art, but because i'm to lazy... I like the images in the gallery here, some more than others. Your images along with the short text under it are stunning, like thruths i didn't know that i knew before i saw and read it.
Second, i agree with all of you on your observations when it comes to galleries on different sites. I like this place, it has a friendly atmophere. I think the owner and admins here are doing a great job.

Hi, guys. I know I've been MIA for a few days, but I'm back again.

Just a few thoughts to add to what you are all saying.

The gloss has worn off Poser for me a little as well. I don't post much, but I still do get enormous enjoyment out of the various images and animations I create for myself. I have found that the ability of some of the artists so far exceeds my own that I am reluctant to post among them, most of you guys included.

When I first found Poser it was like a revelation. The possibilities seemed endless. I went on line after a few weeks using it, the thought that freebies would exist didn't spring to mind at first, despite being a relentless downloader of free Quake levels and mods for the Grand Prix games I played. I discovered a few sites and a whole other world opened up. The possibilities expanded yet againThen I discovered the big freebie sites. OMG!

Now, three years later, I have yet to create that seminal work. The best selling 'toon or magazine cover art that would lift my name into the stratosphere among the Poser communities and, I believe, more importantly, beyond them. But I have a lot of CD's of free stuff

The closed world nature of the Poser community seals it from any real input and expansion of ideas. Poser is shunned and ridiculed by the 'serious' 3D communities and looked on as a bit of a paint by numbers set for pimple faced adolescents with too many hormones. And in a lot of cases they are right. It feeds off itself and mostly finances itself. It is, in short, an inward looking community for the most part.

With any such closed group staleness and sameness eventually permeates the majority. It also becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. People expect NVITWAS images, they see them all around, think they are the 'standard' for the community, like them enough to create pieces for them and spawn more of the same, snowball effect. Anything out of the norm is either ignored or derided until it goes away and the group can settle back to their safe, mundane, non-challenging, non-threatening way of life.

There are some challenging Poser artists around, but the very description, Poser Artist, usually categorises the expectations of the viewer and, sadly in most cases, the content of the piece.

I stay around the community for the friendships, the news and the fun. I download a few freebies and enjoy the work of a number of artists and seek their work out when it is posted. I am not preoccupied with the community and its politics and try to avoid that side of it where I can. Poser and its resultant groups and forums are only a very small part of my life, for some out there it seems to be an all consuming obsession and these are not even the site owners!

Ken; keep up your work. I personally admire your art and your approach. Same for most of the other artists on this site (this is not brown-nosing, it happens to be true) and would be sorry to see you stop. You have some serious talent.

Ozy.

Hey Ken.First of all let me say that even though we have not talked that I have admired your work.I have been out on your site.Indeed the most powerful pictures was the smile from a knife.Another was
a noose and shadow of the girl.Another one was of the girl feeling happy that day and she took a pill to be that way.Ken I don't have to know the titles of them nor do I have to know the girl in question. What is powerful is I remember it and it burns in the back of my mind.Thats what makes your work special.I have been a musician for 26 yrs and I turned off the radio to get origanalty.I don't
look at someones art to be me.I do my own thing.Tormentor with Posie.Den with JR and other origanals,Guilty Pleasures with fantastic gothic to art of tigers and wild life that should be on a castle wall.TdaC with her Faries and a world we can not get to without her as a vehicle to drive us there.Ozy with his wit and that is his driving force to make history or anything at his disposal.I have never tried to copy anyone.I have simply shut down and let myself tell me what to do.I have tried to turn my Poser art upside down.I too have said what's the use.I have stayed with the future where I belong. Not
looking at today but what I want tommorrow.Someone has already had today. And there is you.Where do you stand.Well my friend its in your head. Its that moment that you deside that the moment is right for you to shock them to there senses to show the truth.Life is'nt goody. It should never be.Your art is like a slap in the face.It says if you are not paying any attention this will happen to you.It is powerful
and makes you reach out and grab us,suck us into your soul to leave us thinking.Your art bites at people. Some people run away but it is natural to come back out of habit. As in a auto accident.Groess
but they look anyway.Yes you are powerful and I would by no means cut off the right hand just yet.Poser is what it says.A posing tool of human and life forms.Animation I have made heavily from
this software.Back grounds and textures not too mention countless effects comes from other tools.Yes it is a money maker for the greedy.I have made models, textures, BMVs videos animations, sound tracks
and numorous things with this software.Renderosity is what you say and its not slander, its true fact about the nude, porn and other hey look what I did I just spent $250.00 on this seen.Don't you wish you had it.Blah Blah. Its like competing with the jones (Ozy No Relation) .Just don't go there Ken,just compete with yourselve, for he or she impresses him or herself will surely impress others.I have said before the web is a big place cause man you take on the world.Me I play king in my own sand pile.In my own neighborhood, in my own little world.Be happy in youself as you walk with yourself. You have already
impacked others. You just don't realized it yet. As I said Life is'nt goody. It should never be.Keep Posing my friend,I'll be looking.

I just now stumbled across this posting and reading though it there was a lot of interesting thoughts from everyone. I haven't found myself feeling like quiting yet, but there may come a day when I do. My feelings have always been, when I'm not enjoying it, or having fun, then I stop. I could care less if people like my artwork, it's great if they do, but if they don't that's fine too. Heck my bf doesn't even like my artwork all that much. He says he thinks I'm good at it, but he doesn't understand it nor find it something he would want to spend time looking at for very long. To each his own I say, and what I find appealing others may not, and vise versa. Ken your work always inspired me, still does as well as Den's and Tormies and most everyone on this site. I like the varity of artwork found here, I love the cartoon series that Den and tormie do, that shows not only imagination but commitment to start a series and see it though. Humor is a big part of my world, as you have noticed I tend to be on the crazy side and I enjoy a good sense of humor. I wish I had enough patience to put some of our forum stories we do into a cartoon format of pictures (den, tormie here's your chance for a new adventure
I think the best way to not be disapointed with poser or any of your artwork is to just not do it for other people, do it for yourself, like Tormie said, be your own biggest fan, and let the others fight for 2nd place. I guess that holds true for me too, I enjoy printing out my favorite pieces of art that I make and hanging them on walls or sending them as gifts to my kids who love them almost as much as I do. <I've brainwashed them well> lol
As for the comments on art, well if you think I don't like your artwork because I didn't comment, you are most likely wrong, I comment when I have time, when my hands don't hurt, when I'm not making picture and vewing the gallery during it's rendering time, but as TdaC said, I also get lazy too. I may comment on one of Tormies one day and the next day he may have one that I found even better and I didn't comment on it, because of one of the above reasons. So see comments <at least by me> may not always indicate that I like this one better than that one, or that I didn't like Den's or Ken's pic, becasue that could be far from the truth.
Now if you guys are tried of doing artwork, take a break, if your tired of posting your art on sites, stop posting, but make sure you are doing it for the right reason's, not just to make a point, because as Ken said, the one's your trying to point this out to aren't going to notice anyways. You will just be depriving the one's that really love your work and do care.
Okay, I'm off my high horse now and you can all charge me and thow rotton eggs at me

About comments... I tend to write them when I've the right inspiration, so it happens that I see and write comments for 86 pictures like I've done last week. After I lost all my poser savefiles, I've really lost much of my interest for poser.
I know, it's the coming art that matters, and I still got the renders from the majority of them. But still, I often returned to them to get poses, lights, or use the old scene as a foundation for a new one. And sometimes I'd re-render at higher resolutions for printing.

And, I've realised something. Even though I do first and foremost make my art for myself, it loses alot of meaning if nobody notices it.
What is the point of a message if noone is aware of it?

It depends on your way of thinking... I've my pictures with Posy hanged in my house and my friends like them (they never believe that I'm the author), anyway I'm the first fan of myself, I like a lot my pictures (and Posy ) so I look at my personal album a lot of times.

For what concerns your noobish format of your hard disk , it could be the time for trying different things... (even if I can't think about loosing my Posy , if this would happen I simply would disappear from the poser world if not the world itself...)

I didn't mean to open up a new can of worms here, but I really do understand how bad you feel about loosing your files. I have lost a few things not much thank goodness, one was a picture of a REALLY cute guy I used to chat with on IRC a few years ago, I can't get that back, heck I can't even find him to ask for a new one...now that's just sad! lol
Okay, being serious <as I can be> I know how I feel when I loose something. I have been working on a story that I hope someday to finish as a book and if I were to loose what I have written up on the computer I would have a very hard time getting past it, because it's a piece of my life. But we do, we have to get past things, or we might as well just lay down and die and that's a shame because I'm sure we have a lot more to offer in our lives. Okay, now this is a silly question, but do you own a cdr burner? If so, Back Up Those Files, back them up 2 or 3 times and hopefully that will prevent this kind of thing from happening again

Tormie:
Your kids should be smart guys... Well, what I am saying is, if someone is that worried about losing data, then spend the money on some sort of back up hardware and media. Be it a tape drive, zip drive or some sort of cd-dvd writing drive. Set it up to back everything up once a day or once an hour whenever. And it won't be an issue.

I may be clueless, but is there a way to setup a computer to auto backup a cdr/cdrw without having to manually do it? I know that you would have to manually put the cd into the cdr drive, but if you were to put one in each day/week or however often you have it set to back up, can you then program the computer to start making a back up on it's own? I'm serious, if there is such a way, I would love to be able to do it, it would save me a lot of time and stress.

A good question on the back up.I am not sure if there is such a thing because it would keep the drive pretty busy.I have always every day backed up anything I had that very day.I use to have a P166 with 32mb of memory and a 2gb on the Hdrive.I learned from that computer to back up stuff.Windows XP has a back up that lets you go to the date Windows had problems. To my knowledge it keeps the programs that were put into the PC depending on the date the application was loaded.
GP thank you for those kind words.I think we all make good friends here.

here are a couple links. I don't know what OS any of you are using. but I'm betting they are Microsoft based.
Windows XP and Windows 2000 were built on the same core operating system. the only differences are:
Product activation, application compatability & different interface.

you can start the windows backup utility by going to start then run and type ntbackup and hit enter.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...y/14w2kadc.mspx

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...e/14w2kada.mspx

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...y/11wntpcb.mspx

you could get windows to create the backup file locally using the back-up scheduler, and then manually copy it to the cd-r once a week. better yet a dvd-r holds more. also, you only need to bakup whats changed after you've made a master.

Ken, shame on you You are somebody no matter if you do art, play games or just sit around and twiddle your thumbs! You are a good friend from what I have seen, you are someone that I find to be a very sensitive caring soul and to me that's worth more than anything else. Don't put yourself down or I shall be forced to create a band of monster gnomes to come and drag you across land and sea to Oregon where I shall kick your butt till you admit you are forced to admit I'm right! lol
I agree you did take the loss better than most people, myself included. But you at least have the renders of most of your artwork which is important, I know the poser files themselves would have been nice to have to go back to and use parts and pieces again, but the final outcome of your work is found in the gallerys you have posted to, and I'm sure even on a lot of peoples hard drives that your work has inspired them to download to.
Now fix me a drink and put on this g-string and show me some good pole action pronto before I have this joint closed down for lack of business!

Nex, thank you too, and keep posting, we are all family here and we all must keep having fun!
