I am sure that many of us have also asked these questions, or at least wondered about them from time to time. No matter how creative and prolific, every artist will at times be in need of a fresh idea. Therefore, I thought that this thread could be a place and to share and find the answers to these questions, and maybe find or share a fresh idea or two. The question was asked by an already skilled developing artist, who I also think of as a nice person. In my answer I also provided some ideas of where someone can look to seek inspirations. The following is an expansion of an excerpt derived from my answer to this artist's question: Become an observer of life. Look at what is around you and let the images form. Think of David Lean's advice to Omar Sherif during the filming of [i]Dr. Zhivago[/i]. Paraphrasing from memory, "We can not have you going around reading poetry to show that you are a poet. Instead, stand still and watch the others performing the dramas of the story. You will be seen as a poet watching and feeling the drama. The audience will then accept you as a poet with deep feelings." We need to adapt Mr. Lean's advice. To be an artist live your life, at the same time though, be an observer. Try to see your life from a third person perspective. When you are at a cafe, enjoy your meal, enjoy the moment and still observe all the little scenes, comedies, and dramas that are happenings all around you. Observe the world and feel it, then let that feeling find expression and let the images form in your mind. Even before the images are fully formed, start playing with variations on the theme as soon as you feel the inspiration. Not everytime but often enough, the work can take on a life of its own and before you know it, the picture is all but finished, leaving you wondering where the image came from. Use brainstorming and idle doodling, to your benefit. The urge to just play with some 3d models can sometime become something worthy of being called art. Random connections of sepperate ideas and sometime meld together into an interesting pattern. Think of the movies, television, radio dramas, and books that you have loved. Think of a scene from a story that really touches your soul and create an image or a series of images to express your vision of the work. The Valentine exhibition provides us with a prime example of what I am referring to here. After Tormentor announced the Valentine exhibition, I started thinking of what stories I have seen, heard, or read that presented an image of true love. I thought of several stories, but no image formed so I moved on. I found myself thinking of the Christmas story [i]"Gift of the Magi"[/i]. I started to imagine how to portray it my way and so the [i]"Magi Gifts"[/i] (parts [url=http://posetteforever.com/showphoto.php?photo=1916]1 [url=http://posetteforever.com/showphoto.php?photo=1924]1a [url=http://posetteforever.com/showphoto.php?photo=1920]2 [url=http://posetteforever.com/showphoto.php?photo=1930]e) series was born. After fishing that series, there was still time before the 14'th, and found myself starting to think in cynical frame of mind. Even before the exhibition, I had alread descided that I would like to do a work based on the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea, but I knew that I didn't have enough time left before the 14th so I thought that I would move on to a different story that would be more easy to portray. The combination of cynicism, mythology, and love came together and resulted in the two pictures of [i]"Narcissus in Love"[/i] ([url=http://posetteforever.com/showphoto.php?photo=1943]complete and [url=http://posetteforever.com/showphoto.php?photo=1955]detail) In all field of study and arts we have centuries and even millenia of past experience to draw upon. It has been said, "If I see farther, it is because I stand on the sholders of giants". We the sholder of all current and past artists both obscure and true giants of art to draw upon for our inspirations. So view the art of others and say to yourself how would I have addressed that subject? If it ispires something in you, redo it your way. Don't do a blatent copy of existing art, but rather think to yourself, which part of the original that you liked and disliked, then create your own work that is clearly your own work executed in your style that addresses the theme of the orginal. Of course, give credit where credit is due for the original work that inspired your creation. If you write poetry or stories, try to express them in your visual arts as well. Also remember to not force your art into existance. If you are becoming fustrated as you try and try to create something and are making no more progress than a locomotive with a heavy consist and without sand while on a steep grade. Take a break, work on something else for a while. Or walk away and do something unrelated with art all together. When you are fresh again you may be able to produce again. For this I will cite another example from the production of [i]Dr. Zhivago[/i]. The composer was working on the love theme, one theme after another was written and rejected. Finaly Mr. Lean told him to go on a short vactaion with his lady and to forget about music. According to the version I head about that incident, when he returned to work, the wonderful love theme for that film almost wrote itself. Books ( I like to read a lot of fiction esp Vampire and Horror type books) Movies are another great inspiration for me (New one comming out called "Sin City" that I'm sure is going to give me a lot of inspiration just looking at the trailors on it) TV gives me some as well. I think the best inspiation I get though is looking at other's work, the gallery here, on other sites they all give me inspiration as well as put me in awe of how good others work is and keeps me striving to improve on mine. Another point I keep in mind is just to have fun and enjoy what I'm doing..as when I stop enjoying it, or if it becomes work to me, I will soon stop doing it and move onto something else. I agree with Pangor and his advices. I'm most of the time ispirated by my so-called "novels" and "books" witch I never finish and sometimes even by phrases. There is one particular "book" written by me ( If I don't like something I wrote I burn it later , so most of this writing is already burned : :twisted: :crazy: ) about the perfect country , the price all must pay for its existence and how in the end like all great ancient civilizations this one fall in decadence. It's not even the writing but a term I invited witch inspires me " DFA" or Derima Fatora Anterina in sellen (you know about the "sellen language" :crazy: ) witch means "The newest era" or " The era of the extremes". The begining of DFA is an apocalypse caused by several wars and lots of atom bombs. When I'm thinking or writing about "the essence of DFA" or about "the moral of DFA" there are always several images witch strike in my mind and they're always diffrent. Unfortunately I can't make a 3d image not even a paintings of all. :roll: I call this "apocaliptical aesthetics" it looks more biblical than modern. I also enjoy making covers of my "books" (although there are no books) like these of " Rights of the international finance capital" (What a title for a modern fairy tale! :crazy: ) and "The disdrution factory" (discrution is some kind of hi-tech poison). I'm thinking to upload them in the album when I find the pics. Another (bad) source of inspiration is the everyday life and some idiotic comments made by our imfamous politicians but the result is almost some propaganda-like posters. I'm also keen on making images with choirs with ancient greek-like clothes singing in latin.(Unfortunately I don't know latin [-X ). The last attempt to make a picture illustrating a singing choir was a pic called "Proletarian chorus" witch had to remind Russia of the 50's years of XX century but I get tired to model all the buildings and search for clothes from the 50's and making textures. ( Two months!!! :crazyeyes: :shocked!: ) There is also another specifical kind of source of inspiration related to the language I'm invening I'm trying to show how a particular word like "votrimia" for exemple looks like. The result of all this is some surrealistic don't-know-what sometimes with human figures. :crazy: And of course pain is a huge source of inspiration but not very desirable. [-X I mean mental pain. It's part of his appeal. Inspiration! Back to the topic. :bigrinnin: So many, so many. I have been trying to illustrate my own stories lately. Cover art and a few selected panels, things like that. I also have a soft spot for old episodes of Doctor Who and create the odd picture of that. The show used to really get me. Sometimes it comes from a book I have just finished reading and want to create a scene from... so many sources. In the situation that I am in now, it seems that the fates and my muse is demanding that I should start working on more than one pitcure right away. I am not sure which I will work on first, so I have started the preliminary work on both of them. The problem is that while I start trying to do a little work on one of them images of the other one starts to demand attention. But now I am getting a head of myself. After finishing and uploading the my most recent work last night, I thought to spend a day or two doing other things, perhaps reinstall "X Beyond the Frontier" and see if I can take out those Xenon energy crystal fabs. But as it turned out other things came up that needed attention. During free time earlier today, I descided to do some of the lessons from the whatmeartist course. When doing one of the excercises guess what happened. Elements from the pictures were brought back to the foreground. When working on another excercise, the samething happened again. So now I will start working on the preliminary work for both of them. The problem is that I am not sure which one I wil start the main work on first, "If I had Wings" or "100 Naked Ladies". Those are the current working titles, I may change them as I go along. They will both need some new techniques with some of those techniques in common, so both can be considered as the pratice work for the other. To alter Regina into the character for the "Relaxing..." I had to make enough changes to her face and figure included a few new morphs and a derived a new texture that Virgina was born. I worked a little more to "perfect" her for general use. Then I started a speed art exercise using her, expecting to spend a week created a render a day. In roleplaying games, I research different details to make the game as real as possible and adding a 3D picture is just another type of presentation (e.g. a picture is worth a 1000 words). Perhaps I'd better explain. Though like all teenaged boys I liked to look at photos of naked women, it was the "Oh Wicked Wanda" at the back of the magazine that got my full undivided attention. OWW was an attempt to rip off the success of Playboy's "Little Annie Fannie" strip, which it only sporadically succeeded at. But for some reason I just fell in love with Ron Embleton's painting style - especially the lovely little touches in the background. I've still got all the pages I ripped out of the magazines all those years back, and having found the Subtextopedia site which has the full run of OWW on the site, I'm even happier. Randomness is your muse. sort of what my martial art instructor told me before going to the fight...don't think, don't anticipate, but just go with the flow.... I just load up posette. And i randomly pick a freestuff (prop, building etc) and from there I construct a story, an art, a series.... ...just like and indie movie. So unpredictable. :redface: :D
