A couple of suggestions:

-If you have unrecognized hardware (no drivers installed) in the control panel, go to the properties of the hardware, in the drop down box look at the ID and search for it in google, you'll find what it is and the drivers
-For scretched DVDs, if the damage is not too deep there is a solution that always worked for me: use some tooth paste on toilet paper and use it to smear the scretch in the opposite direction of it , you've to use some pressure and maybe to do the process again and again. you can safely wash the DVD under the water to clean it from the toothpaste.
