I'll make this as quick as I can.

Decided to (finally) install my old, fully patched version of Poser 5 and see what all the fuss about the Firefly Engine is about.

(Yes, I know P5 is getting long in the tooth, and I do have P7, but my machine is a little flakey and really needs more memory before I start playing with the latest generation of software.)

First off - I'm using the Download directory for, well, my dowloads.  Is it normal for access to the files to be so slow when opening folders, and if so is it better to chuck all files into the original Runtime hierarchy?

Second - and main the reason I'm writing this - WHY am I getting multiple texture nodes on characters that don't actually need them.  I've been slowly going through all my downloaded Posette texture and character files, and it's aggravating having to manually stomp on unwanted nodes before rendering.

I do remember complaints and possible fixes for this problem, but not sure if they involved a python script or a more permament diddling of Poser's configuration files.

Thirdly... is there any way to permamently kill off the 'Content Paradise' room..?

GrouchoC

Those are not "stupid" questions.

1.)  If there are many files in any directory (folder), then yes P5 does take awhile to open it. No, to add all the "downloads" to the Runtime folder will make it load slower.
I have several (30+) different folders to help manage this problem. I chose to name them to help me find things (ie. Victoria, Vehicles, archetecture, archetectural props, Hair,...). I understand that P6 & P7 have solved the problem of long seek times in large runtimes.

2.) I'd need more info before I could answer this question. I started using Poser with version 5; so I don't know much about the differences between it and previous versions.

3.) Yes. {see attachment.}

Hi Groucho
I'm messing with the same stuff.
Beginning of this year I made the big step from Poser3 (!) to Poser6
I mounted my old P3 runtimes into the file system and it is a lot slower than the actual P6 runtime, too.
I don't use firefly at all, yet. Messing around with the materials is driving me nuts.
I use only P4 engine with "ignore shader trees" option checked (don't know if it's avaliable in P5).
It renders much faster and is good enough for me . I've found pose files somewhere to detach all the nodes, but only for the Daz people . There are some Pythons around doing this job, too. Still have to figure that out...
I'm spending a lot of time creating Mat poses for all my Posette textures
The "CP" room can be deactivated by editing the "posershell.xml" located in Runtimeui, I think (not yet tested, too!!!)
I'd appreciate some more information, too...

I think that making a material without nodes and apply it to the part would solve the problem... However the nodes that come with (for example) default Posette should not have more nodes than the needed ones

Thank you all for the help, just what I need and much appreciated.

I've been using multiple Runtime folders for my different characters as well, and it is the main reason I've taken so long to sort through all my freebies.  I get into the habit of storing the archives according to categories when downloading them, and it's natural to subdivide the Runtimes in the same way.

(Note for the terminally geeky: I'm so petty that I use ACDSee's description function to note who created every single file I installed came from, with little tags to describe the type of file it is as well.  Makes searching for stuff easier, but boy, the set-up time!)

Thinking about it, it's not just multiple nodes, but also new duplicated materials,  e.g. Nipple and Nipples.

Come to think of it, is there any easy way to remove a material from an object in the material room other than using Groups?  I've been hand-editing files with a file-editor (call me old-fashioned....) and maybe it's time I looked for a MAT editor...?

Anyhow, thanks again.

(Adopting typical steeple-handed pose of rich money-hungry octagenarian...) Eeeexcellent!

Oh, and for the (embarrasing) record:

Just checked my Poser details and realized I only patched it up to SR3 level.  Installed SR4, and now have appreciably fewer time delays navigating through the Downloads.  (Could still be improved, however...!)

(See, I told you they were stupid questions!)

Wow, she's a looker, too.  But unfortunately for her, I already have a bright, shining, all-consuming love in my life: Me!

But hey, maybe a night out singing on the fence...?

Posy, for a definition of looker, look in YOUR mirror.
