OK, time to let my ignorance show.....
I've never IRC'd in my life...
Where do I go...what do I do
I'm looking through my program files and I find "MIRC" .....
...don't know where it came from   Perhaps my kids.....
Anyhow....how do I use it?

you could try something like trillian, it will let you chat thru all the popular chat program services, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, and IRC.   when looking to connect to an IRC channel you'll need the server address, generally formatted as irc.servername.net, and the channel (room) name, formated as #channelname.
