you could try something like trillian, it will let you chat thru all the popular chat program services, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, and IRC. when looking to connect to an IRC channel you'll need the server address, generally formatted as irc.servername.net, and the channel (room) name, formated as #channelname.
